NLC challenges Tinubu’s latest request for foreign loans

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s request for parliamentary approval to obtain fresh external loans of $20.5 billion and €1.45 billion. NLC president Joe Ajaero questioned continued borrowing when the government says petrol subsidy removal has increased revenue and crude oil is selling above $100 a barrel, compared with the 2026 budget benchmark of $70. He warned that the loans would add to the country’s debt burden and called for greater transparency, while noting that the NLC itself cannot approve or reject government borrowing. Ajaero said the National Assembly could block the request by rejecting it.

It called on Issa Tchiroma Bakary to take part in upcoming elections within the legal framework, saying his performance in the 2025 presidential election merits institutional representation. The PCRN urged public authorities, political leaders and citizens to show restraint and engage in dialogue.

National Assembly adopts recommendation urging government to accelerate FONHAB’s transformation into a public housing bank

The National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of the Congo adopted, with amendments, a recommendation urging the government to speed up the transformation of the National Housing Fund (FONHAB) into a public housing bank. The proposal followed an intervention by MP Mechack Mandefu Muela and was presented in a plenary session on October 28 by rapporteur Jacques Djoli. It calls for a feasibility process coordinated by the prime minister, an interministerial steering mechanism, and a roadmap with clear milestones and measurable goals. It also asks the government to examine the creation of a new banking institution, the orderly dissolution of FONHAB, and ways to mobilize capital and financial partnerships.
