Non-customs-cleared phones: Motaze pressures, MTN and Orange warn of system flaws

On June 5, 2026, Cameroon's Finance Minister Louis Paul Motaze sent a letter to the CEOs of MTN Cameroon and Orange Cameroon, criticizing them for not implementing the conclusions of the May 22 meeting on blocking non-customs-cleared phones. The minister urges urgent application of the system, which bans access to mobile networks for fraudulently imported phones since April 1, 2026, by blocking IMEIs not registered on the reform tracking platform, not phone numbers.
