At least 70,000 people now have access to drinking water in the Kibumba and Buhumba areas, thanks to the 'Water for Virunga' project funded by the Netherlands. Launched in December 2016, the project overcame security and technical challenges to transport water over 39 kilometers of pipelines. In addition to improving public health, it aims to reduce community tensions related to the management of shared natural resources.
