AI challenges mathematics by solving the unsolvable

Since April, AI companies have been publishing solutions to previously unsolved mathematical problems, and OpenAI released 719 such solutions last week. Hugo Duminil-Copin, the 2022 Fields Medal winner, says the advances have upended research avenues, while Stéphane Mallat, a 2025 CNRS Gold Medal recipient, argues mathematicians will remain essential for clear thinking, understanding and teaching. The Simons Foundation announced a $15 million programme co-funded by OpenAI and Anthropic to help mathematicians assess AI-generated results and set standards for their use.
