Ondo State Assembly Passes Bill to Establish State Police

Ondo State’s House of Assembly passed a bill on Monday at a plenary session in Akure to amend the 1999 Constitution and enable the establishment of state police services. House Leader Olatunji Oshati said the proposal could address the country’s security challenges; it had been sent to the assembly in a letter from National Assembly Clerk Kamoru Ogunlana, read by Speaker Olamide Oladiji on September 24. Oladiji said community-based policing could improve intelligence gathering and speed up responses to crime. The bill will be transmitted to the National Assembly for further legislative consideration.
