OpenAI has confirmed it is reviewing a report of a failed hacking attempt against a Canadian government agency, raising cybersecurity concerns about artificial intelligence. The company stated it has provided an initial briefing to Canadian officials and noted that most of the suspicious activity involved routine research tasks such as accessing public web content. The nonprofit research lab Transluce reported discovering two rudimentary attack attempts against Library and Archives Canada and a US Department of Education agency, with no evidence of access to non-public information. This could be the first publicly known AI-led cyberattack against Canada's government, following similar incidents in the US and Australia.
