‘Orphaned’ by floods, more than 500 Nepali children face uncertain future

More than 500 Nepali children are living in temporary shelters following the devastating floods on August 26, 2026, which killed over 1,400 people. Among them is nine-year-old Ram Thakur, who is desperately waiting for his missing parents. Although Nepali law requires a person to be missing for 12 years before being declared dead, the children are in limbo, not yet legally orphans but without their parents since the disaster.
