Over 100,000 centenarians counted in Japan for the first time in history

Japan now has 107,677 centenarians, a record figure established on September 1, 2026, with an increase of 7,914 people from the previous year. Women make up 87.6% of this population, totaling 94,298 centenarians. Health Minister Kenichiro Ueno emphasized the significance of this trend for society. Shimane Prefecture has the highest rate of centenarians, with 186.65 per 100,000 inhabitants.
