Over 5bn people rely on forests for livelihoods — FAO

More than five billion people worldwide rely on forests for their livelihoods, according to a FAO report titled 'Forests for Food: Nourishing People, Sustaining the Planet'. The report highlights the importance of forests in food security and nutrition, urging countries to integrate them into agrifood system policies. In 2025, about 645 million people experienced chronic hunger, while deforestation resulted in an average loss of 10.9 million hectares of forest annually over the last decade.
