Immigration: Australia Tightens Rules for Tourists Overstaying Visas

Australia will place tourists who overstay their visas in administrative detention, with 77,000 people currently in the country without valid visas. Immigration Minister Tony Burke announced deterrent measures, including the opening of 250 additional detention places. The new rules will also affect family members of international students and introduce a lottery system for working holiday visas. The government aims to reduce net migration to 225,000 people per year by 2027-2028.
