Paraguay banking crisis: former president Santiago Peña questioned by justice after impeachment

Paraguay’s Senate impeached former president Santiago Peña on Friday, unanimously finding him guilty of “poor performance of his duties” over the collapse of Ueno Bank. The Central Bank placed the online lender under administration for insolvency, freezing deposits belonging to nearly three million customers, as well as businesses, institutions and pension funds. Arrested on Friday, Peña was questioned at the attorney general’s office in Asunción on Saturday as part of an investigation into suspected breach of trust, influence peddling and fraudulent management. His successor, Pedro Alliana, pledged full compensation for people affected by the financial crisis.
