Paraguay resumes Peña impeachment proceedings as financial crisis deepens

Paraguay’s Senate resumed impeachment proceedings against President Santiago Peña on Friday despite his resignation the day before, giving him 72 hours to prepare his defence. The lower house had approved the charges by a vote of 78–0. The political turmoil follows the central bank’s intervention at Ueno Bank over breaches of minimum solvency requirements. The lender’s collapse, after holding $850 million in public funds, has left more than half the population unable to access their accounts; Peña, who held a stake in its parent company Grupo Vázquez until last year, apologised for failing to prevent the crisis.
