Parties make final push as South Africa’s local election turnout fears grow

Ahead of South Africa’s local government elections on Wednesday, November 4, political parties are making final appeals for voters to turn out, after participation fell from 57.94% in 2016 to 45.87% in 2021. After adopting the motion, the House urged the authorities to verify and pay all legally owed arrears within a clearly defined period.

They say the new list conflicts with an earlier presidential directive naming Governor Ademola Adeleke to lead the state campaign, after which he inaugurated a broad-based team. The dissenting members urge the APC’s national leadership, especially its National Secretary, to intervene, prevent division and clarify the committees’ responsibilities.
