Persons with disabilities, advocates call for cheaper assistive devices across Nigeria

During the 2026 World Day for Assistive Technology, organized by the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) at the School for Arabic Studies in Kano, persons with disabilities and advocates raised concerns over the rising cost of assistive technologies in Nigeria. Mariya Ishaq of the Albinism Association of Nigeria highlighted the importance of devices such as magnifiers, umbrellas, and sunscreen. Ibrahim Abdulkarim, vice principal of the Special Education School in Tudun Maliki, called for local production to cut costs and noted a shortage of Braille paper. Stakeholders urged governments to increase budgets, remove import duties, and establish assistive technology resource centers.
