Pete Hegseth Dismisses the Pentagon’s Top Military Planner Without Official Explanation

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissed Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia on October 28. Sylvia was the Joint Staff’s director for strategy, plans and policy; no reason was given for his removal and no successor was named, despite the J5 role’s importance in advising General Dan Caine and linking military operations, defense policy and the White House. Officials cited by The Atlantic said Hegseth may have lost confidence in Sylvia, whose relationship with defense policy chief Elbridge Colby was reportedly difficult. Sylvia is the second person to leave the post in a year, and at least 26 generals and admirals have departed or been removed since Hegseth arrived at the Pentagon.

Tshisekedi reaffirmed his preference for diplomatic efforts through the Washington and Doha processes, alongside African Union mediation, and called for verifiable implementation of diplomatic progress. He also listed energy, infrastructure, local mineral processing, food security and fertilizer as DRC economic priorities.

Flávio Bolsonaro calls himself 'leader of Brazil' after election loss

After losing Brazil’s presidential run-off to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Flávio Bolsonaro published a letter from the United States describing himself as Brazil’s “leader” and alleging, without evidence, that the election was fraudulent. He has not conceded, despite Lula’s 4.4-million-vote margin, and says he will lead the opposition from the US. Bolsonaro left Brazil after failing to surrender his passports as ordered by the Supreme Court in a money-laundering investigation; he has not been charged and denies wrongdoing. Both campaigns had requested extended voting hours, the electoral authority said the vote was conducted normally, and about 34,000 people voted during the extension.
