PIA reforms boost oil output by 600,000 barrels per day, NNPC says

Nigeria’s oil production has risen from about 1.2 million to 1.8 million barrels per day following implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act and sector reforms, NNPC chief executive Bashir Bayo Ojulari said at ADIPEC 2026 in Abu Dhabi. NNPC is targeting two million barrels per day by 2027 through infrastructure maintenance, protection of existing output and new projects. Ojulari said the OB3 gas pipeline was completed and the AKK pipeline was expected to deliver gas to Abuja before the end of 2026. NNPC also targets national gas production of 10 billion standard cubic feet per day in 2027 and 12 billion in 2030, with investment agreements worth about $20 billion concluded for major projects.

Nigeria needs 10% growth to reduce poverty, Peterside says

Atedo Peterside, businessman and former chairman of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, said at a conference in Abuja that growth of about 4% is insufficient to generate the jobs and investment needed to reduce poverty. He urged Nigeria to target annual growth of 10% and cited declining investment, corruption, political patronage and misuse of public funds as major barriers. Kano Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II said growth of about 4.5% does not by itself show whether Nigerians are better off, pointing to the naira’s depreciation and its effects on GDP per capita and purchasing power. He said the economy should also be judged by access to education, healthcare, nutrition and employment, and by how economic opportunities are distributed.
