Pink October: 4,120 Women Screened — Number of Positive Breast and Cervical Cancer Cases Revealed

Senegal’s Pink October campaign screened more than 4,120 women in Niomré, Touba and Podor, including 3,420 in Podor. The screenings in Podor identified 145 suspected cases or precancerous lesions, and those affected were referred for appropriate care. Health officials stressed the importance of early detection; breast cancer accounts for about 2,220 new cases and more than 1,300 deaths each year in Senegal. Limited information, social taboos and barriers to care continue to delay diagnosis.
