Police Arrest Two Masquerades over Alleged Assault and Extortion in Akwa Ibom

Police in Akwa Ibom State arrested two men suspected of assault and extortion in parts of the Ikot Ekpene area. Ine Isong, 29, and Emmanuel Ekpenyong, 20, were detained on 26 October along the Ukana-Abak Highway, reportedly carrying Ekpo masquerade costumes, machetes, spears and arrows. Police said the suspects and others had allegedly terrorised residents, extorted money and assaulted people, particularly women. Investigations are ongoing, and Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azar warned against using cultural traditions as a cover for crime.
