Pope Leo diagnosed with cancer after surgery to remove part of lung

Pope Leo XIV was diagnosed with cancer after a surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, according to a Vatican medical bulletin. The 90-minute procedure was successful with no complications, and the 71-year-old pope has returned to his room at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, expected to recover for a week. Doctors are not currently discussing chemotherapy or other treatments pending further tests. The pope, who is physically active and healthy, discovered a small nodule during his Sunday prayer in St. Peter’s Square.
