Poultry Sector: Six Heavy Metals Detected in Cameroonian Chicken and Eggs

Researchers from the University of Yaoundé I and the Institute of Medical Research detected lead, nickel, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, and mercury in samples of chicken and eggs from Cameroon’s Central, Littoral, and West regions. The study, published on September 1, 2026, analyzed 48 chickens and 180 eggs from 12 farms, with chemical tests on 18 composite samples. Mercury was found to be especially concentrated in chicken livers.
