Power supply: Nigerian government begins moving electricity equipment stranded at ports for over 10 years

On President Bola Tinubu’s directive, Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Power has cleared 44 containers of electrical equipment from Apapa Port, out of more than 300 containers stranded there, some since 2014. Minister Joseph Tegbe said technical experts will inspect the equipment, send serviceable items to ongoing power projects and dispose of the rest appropriately. The Nigeria Customs Service and Nigerian Ports Authority were instructed to reconcile outstanding charges and end the delays. Separately, the Niger Delta Power Holding Company recovered 110 containers and 216 packages, saving more than ₦30 billion and unlocking about 470 megawatts for the national grid.

At the Néo Charging station operated by Petro-Ivoire, electricity costs 230 CFA francs per kWh, and a full recharge costs 12,000–14,000 CFA francs depending on the vehicle. In November 2026, the maximum price for unleaded petrol is 905 CFA francs per litre and diesel 725 CFA francs, while filling a conventional vehicle can cost more than 40,000 CFA francs.
