Protesters clash with police during nationwide demonstrations in France

Demonstrations against the rising cost of living took place across France on Saturday, with protesters clashing with police in Paris, where officers used tear gas and made arrests. In Marseille, protesters reportedly breached the town hall and looted shops, while media reports said Lyon’s tourism office was set ablaze. By midday, the Interior Ministry had recorded 140 protest actions involving 32,800 participants and said 166 people had been arrested nationwide. Unions, teachers, citizens and “yellow vest” protesters also joined the rallies, following weeks of high school student protests over school conditions.
