Ramaphosa's immigration address fails to tackle xenophobic violence, civil coalition warns

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Sunday five measures to tighten immigration controls and address illegal migration, amid ongoing protests in several parts of the country. A coalition of anti-xenophobia organizations, led by Global South Against Xenophobia (GSAX), criticized the address, saying it failed to provide immediate solutions to xenophobic violence and lacked legal measures to stop vigilante mob attacks. The coalition also accused the government of failing to address the structural causes of social tensions, such as poverty, unemployment, and inequality. Residents of Ekurhuleni marched against a company suspected of hiring foreign nationals and delivered memorandums to industrial companies.
