East Africa is stepping up efforts to clean up its busiest trade route, the Northern Corridor, as rising cargo volumes and thousands of diesel-powered trucks increase pressure on the environment, transport costs, and road infrastructure. About 75,000 tonnes of cargo move daily on this route, carried by 2,000 to 3,000 trucks, according to the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority (NCTTCA). Road freight is becoming a significant and growing source of greenhouse gas emissions in the region.
