Rejection of the 2026 Amended Finance Bill Fuels Government Tensions

The National Assembly’s Finance and Budgetary Oversight Committee rejected the entire 2026 amended finance bill on Friday, October 23, along with the government’s two proposed amendments. The setback has heightened tensions between the executive and the Pastef parliamentary majority ahead of a plenary session scheduled for October 27. Economy, Finance and Planning Minister Cheikh Diba and Budget Minister Delegate Bassirou Sarr had defended the bill. Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko had called for tighter controls on special funds and greater transparency in public finance management.

DRC: Amid Security Crisis, Constitutional Debate and National Dialogue, Tshisekedi Meets His Parliamentary Majority

Félix Tshisekedi is due to meet members of the Union sacrée de la Nation in parliament on October 24, 2026, at the Cité de l’Union africaine in Kinshasa, according to the platform’s permanent secretary, André Mbata Mangu. The meeting comes amid persistent insecurity in eastern DRC and after the National Assembly passed a referendum bill at first reading; the Senate is next to review it. Opposition lawmaker Christian Mwando Nsimba Kabulo says the bill seeks to bypass constitutionally protected provisions and extend Tshisekedi’s time in power, while also closing the door to national dialogue. The meeting also follows the AFC/M23 rebellion’s rebranding as the Front pour la refondation de la nation, led by former president Joseph Kabila, twelve days earlier.

FG’s 90-Day Cost-of-Living Plan Is Vote-Buying, Says YPP Presidential Candidate

Young Progressives Party (YPP) presidential candidate Architect Peter Agada called the federal government’s 90-day plan to ease the cost of living “vote-buying,” saying it ignores economic realities and is likely to fail. He promoted his #LabourDirect ward-level development strategy, which would provide 40 million naira per ward each month, alongside a dashboard to track projects, jobs, production and revenue. Agada cited unfulfilled economic pledges made since 2023 and said removing tariffs on food imports had not lowered food prices. He urged Nigerians to demand monthly job-creation figures, arguing that a 90-day timetable extending beyond the election could be a campaign strategy for 2027.
