The Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (Rerec) plans to hybridize 20 of its diesel power plants with solar, after Treasury approval. CEO Rose Mkalama says the move aims to cut the annual fuel bill of Sh1.16 billion and lower electricity prices for consumers. Currently, diesel power costs about Sh26.9 per kWh, compared to Sh11.13 for solar. The hybridization will relegate diesel to backup only, reducing operational costs.
