Biodegradable wipes in the toilet: This common mistake can cost you dearly

Flushing biodegradable wipes can clog pipes and disrupt wastewater systems, despite their reassuring label. They break down gradually through the action of microorganisms, sometimes over weeks or months, but do not disperse quickly in water like toilet paper. Their strength can cause them to build up, tangle with other waste, trap grease and form blockages. Slow drainage, gurgling sounds and unpleasant odors can signal a problem that may lead to repair costs.

COP 17 on Biodiversity: From Yerevan, the UN Urges States to Turn Promises into Action

The COP17 biodiversity conference opened in Yerevan, Armenia, urging countries to turn commitments under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, adopted in 2022, into action. Astrid Schomaker, executive secretary of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, said commitments made by 196 countries must be matched by stronger measures as more than one million species face extinction. Discussions include the goal of protecting 30% of the world’s land and seas by 2030 and calls for Indigenous peoples, local communities, women, young people, cities, businesses and financial institutions to contribute more to conservation.

The flood swept through the commercial centre, destroying shops and homes and carrying away residents’ and traders’ belongings. Kakule Kagheni Samuel, head of the local civil society group, urged authorities to respond urgently and adopt lasting measures to reduce flood risks.
