Rivers Assembly Set to Reinstate Three Suspended Pro-Fubara Lawmakers

The Rivers State House of Assembly reversed its decision to declare vacant the seats of three lawmakers who support Governor Siminalayi Fubara: Victor Oko-Jumbo, Sokari Goodboy Sokari and Orubienimigha Timothy. At Monday’s plenary, Speaker Martin Amaewhule read their letters saying they had not received notice that their suspensions had been lifted and asking to resume their duties now that peace had returned. Their seats were declared vacant in October 2025 after they failed to attend sittings, and the Assembly had asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to hold by-elections. The reversal followed a Sunday meeting involving Fubara, Nyesom Wike and other political leaders, aimed at resolving differences between the two camps ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The new division will have a broader mandate than research and will not replace the NIH’s Office of Research on Women’s Health. Priorities include targeted research into diseases affecting women, such as endometriosis, and getting promising treatments to female patients sooner.
