Road Checks in Benin: Public Security Explains the Seizure of Thousands of Vehicles

Over 3,000 vehicles were seized in Benin between September 20 and October 2 during a crackdown on traffic violations. Public security director Jean-Marie Sèglé stated that the operation aimed to improve safety rather than generate revenue, targeting violations such as running red lights, not wearing helmets, and using phones while driving. The operation took place in major cities including Cotonou, Porto-Novo, Abomey-Calavi, Sèmè-Podji, Ouidah, Bohicon, and Parakou, with the goal of responsabilizing drivers and changing their behavior. Controls will continue to ensure road safety and adherence to traffic rules.
