Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Ukraine has recaptured more territory since the start of autumn than Russia has seized. The Institute for the Study of War estimates that Kyiv has made a net gain of 241 square kilometres since September 1, while Ukraine’s General Staff rejects Russian claims of capturing 1,800 square kilometres. Ukrainian estimates put Russian losses at 46,230 soldiers in September and 37,000 so far in October, including a wartime daily record of 2,250 losses on October 21. Russia has responded by striking dozens of energy facilities and using cluster bombs in attacks that harmed civilians.
