Salvadoran ex-president Saca released after 10-year sentence for corruption

Elias Antonio Saca, El Salvador’s president from 2004 to 2009, was released after serving a 10-year sentence for embezzlement and money laundering. Under a plea deal, he admitted diverting and laundering more than $300 million in public funds; his lawyer, Mario Machado, said he served the full term without early-release benefits. Saca was arrested at his son’s wedding in 2016 and was also convicted in 2019 of offering a court employee $10,000 for information about his case. He was ordered to repay $260 million to the state.

Okorocha vs Uzodimma: Court judgment raises jurisdiction question, says Ahiakwo

Constitutional lawyer and analyst Justice Osai Ahiakwo questioned the Federal High Court’s jurisdiction after it recognised Rochas Okorocha as the APC candidate for Imo West Senatorial District in the 2027 elections. The APC reportedly held its primary on May 18, 2026, while Okorocha filed suit on August 13, raising questions about the Constitution’s 14-day limit for pre-election cases. Ahiakwo said the court first had to establish whether the suit challenged the primary or a later decision recognising the party’s candidate, because a favourable ruling on the merits cannot cure a jurisdictional defect. He also said Section 183 does not automatically bar Governor Hope Uzodimma from a Senate nomination and urged caution until the certified judgment and court filings are examined.

The Sentry calls for an investigation into conflict-gold routes linking the DRC to Ugandan networks and sanctions for those laundering it for the ADF

In its investigation, “Gold-Backed Brutality,” The Sentry urges the UN, the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union to investigate supply chains connecting eastern DRC to Ugandan gold-trading, refining and export networks. It calls for identifying traders, intermediaries, refiners, exporters and financial facilitators who knowingly or negligently help launder gold for the ADF, so they can be considered for sanctions. The organization says military pressure has displaced the group rather than dismantled it and recommends long-term civilian strategies, including helping communities resolve local conflicts exploited by the ADF.
