Sao Tome and Principe: Former Colonial Plantations Added to UNESCO Heritage

Last month, former colonial plantations in Sao Tome and Principe, built on the backs of slavery and forced labor, were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. These agricultural estates, known as 'rocas', are mostly abandoned, presenting a preservation challenge for the archipelago. The Sundy plantation, for instance, still features 'sanzalas' where agricultural workers lived.
