SASSA steps up grant reviews as beneficiaries urged not to ignore verification requests
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is increasing efforts to ensure social grants reach eligible recipients, with over 100,000 grants reviewed in the first quarter of the 2026/27 fiscal year. Routine checks, including life certifications, are conducted to verify that beneficiaries still meet the eligibility criteria, especially if their circumstances change. SASSA emphasized that being selected for review does not automatically indicate fraud or grant termination, but beneficiaries must respond to notices within the specified timeframe to avoid payment delays or suspension. During this period, 105,508 grants were reviewed, 102,019 life certifications processed, and 3,611 overpayment cases identified for recovery.
