Second Act of Protests: Mélenchon Urges Macron to Back Down as Demonstrators Defy the Élysée

Tens of thousands of people demonstrated across France on October 24 against the rising cost of living and insecurity, in a second round of protests involving Yellow Vests, unions, school pupils and students. Authorities deployed 70,000 police officers and gendarmes, 20% more than the previous week; the midday tally reported 35,000 demonstrators and 135 arrests, with no major incidents reported. In Paris, the police prefecture changed the march route from Bastille to Porte d’Italie, a decision demonstrators saw as provocative. Jean-Luc Mélenchon urged Emmanuel Macron to “back down” and predicted a “general strike,” while a counter-demonstration against the National Rally in Orléans drew between 11,000 and 26,000 people.

Palestinian families displaced as Israeli forces demolish Hebron homes, local officials say

Israeli forces demolished homes, businesses and infrastructure in Hebron’s Ein Deir Baha and Farsh al-Hawa neighbourhoods and sealed off the city, according to Palestinian officials. Mayor Youssef al-Jaabari said dozens of families spent the night outdoors, while the governor and deputy mayor reported that at least 200 families had been displaced. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the operation after an attack at a checkpoint killed two Israeli soldiers and injured three; the two Palestinian gunmen were also killed. Netanyahu said buildings connected to the attack and the gunmen’s neighbourhoods would be destroyed, a practice Israeli rights groups have criticised as collective punishment.

Nigeria-Indonesia Investment Could Boost GDP and Create Jobs, Says Balogun

Ishmael Balogun, president of the Nigerian Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NICCI), said stronger investment between the two countries, particularly in oil and gas exploration, could raise Nigeria’s GDP, create jobs and transfer knowledge. Speaking at the fifth Nigerian Indonesian Investment and Trade Forum in Jakarta on October 20–21, 2026, he said bilateral trade had grown from $2 billion in 2020 to $4.5 billion in 2023. Indonesia buys about $3 billion worth of Nigerian crude oil annually, while Nigerian businesses import pharmaceuticals, palm oil and electronics from Indonesia. An Indonesian government and business delegation recently visited Nigeria, as discussions continue on establishing direct government-to-government oil trade and investment ties.

COMESA: Floribert Anzuluni stresses peace and security as pillars of regional economic integration

Representing Félix Tshisekedi at the COMESA ministerial meeting and 25th summit, held on October 21 and 22, 2026, in Mount Hampden, Zimbabwe, Congolese Regional Integration Minister Floribert Anzuluni stressed the link between security and economic integration. He urged the COMESA Secretariat to address conditions in eastern DR Congo, where hostilities and a worsening humanitarian crisis persist, and where the AFC/M23 rebellion has reportedly become the Front for National Refoundation, led by Joseph Kabila. At the summit, Anzuluni condemned Rwanda’s aggression, abuses against civilians, forced displacement, parallel administrations and the looting of natural resources. He called for effective implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2773 and the Washington peace agreement, which requires Rwanda to withdraw its forces.
