Nigeria’s Senate has instructed its committees and the Clerk to suspend the processing of bills seeking to establish new universities and other tertiary institutions. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele said the policy is intended to strengthen existing institutions before creating new ones. Senate President Godswill Akpabio said President Bola Tinubu opposed establishing new institutions for five to seven years, giving existing schools time to develop infrastructure and begin effective academic operations. The Senate adjourned until November 10, 2026.
