Senegal: 4 People Charged in Connection with Political Violence from 2021-2024

In Senegal, the judiciary issued the first charges this week related to political unrest that resulted in dozens of deaths between 2021 and 2024. Four individuals are accused of kidnapping, illegal detention, torture, and violence during protests in June 2023, linked to supporters of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko. Amnesty International welcomed the legal proceedings, while civil party lawyers described them as a modest and late step toward a trial. At least 65 people have been killed during opposition protests from March 2021 to February 2024, according to a group of journalists and researchers.
