Senegal: Concern over early tobacco initiation among children

On World No Tobacco Day 2026, Senegalese health authorities and the WHO expressed concern over the rise in early tobacco initiation among children. One in five children has tried tobacco, with an average initiation age of 7. The tobacco industry is accused of targeting youth through flavors, attractive packaging, and social media. Senegal plans to strengthen anti-tobacco efforts around six priorities, including banning new products and stricter law enforcement.
