Senegal: Diomaye Faye Reflects on the Decision to Replace Ousmane Sonko

Bassirou Diomaye Faye explained on September 24 in New York that he decided to replace Ousmane Sonko as Senegal's Prime Minister due to a breakdown in trust between them. The change followed Sonko’s departure from the government in May 2026, after a presidential decree. Faye had previously stated in May that trust was necessary for his position and appointed Ahmadou Al Aminou Lo as Prime Minister. Sonko, elected President of the National Assembly after leaving the government, stated there would be no rift with Faye despite their disagreements.
