Senegalese Literature: Cheikh Hamidou Kane, the Child of Matam, Dies at 98

Cheikh Hamidou Kane, author of « L'Aventure ambiguë », died in Dakar on October 4, 2026, at the age of 98. Born in Matam in 1928, he served as governor, High Commissioner for Planning, minister under Senghor and Diouf, and was responsible for UNICEF in about twenty countries. His influential yet concise body of work examines the clash between tradition and modernity, notably through his novels, including « Les Gardiens du Temple » published in 1995. His first novel, « L'Aventure ambiguë », published in 1961, won the Grand Prix littéraire d'Afrique noire and became a classic, exploring the tension between faith and reason.
