Seven missing after multi-storey building collapses in Kenya's capital

A 16- or 18-storey building under construction collapsed on Friday afternoon in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area, and seven people are feared trapped beneath the rubble. Sixty-six of the 67 construction workers inside escaped unharmed, while one suffered non-life-threatening injuries; the missing people were thought to be in shops that had opened on the ground floor. Rescuers stopped using diggers amid concerns that excavation could restrict the air supply to survivors. Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson said the building’s owners lacked the required occupancy paperwork, renewing concerns about construction standards and regulation.
