Shipping major raises freight fees on China-originating cargo to East Africa

Danish shipping giant Maersk has announced an increase in its Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) for cargo shipped from China and Hong Kong to the ports of Mombasa and Dar es Salaam, effective June 15, 2026. The surcharge for a 20-foot container rises from $900 to $1,000, while a 40-foot container jumps from $1,100 to $2,000. This significant hike is expected to raise costs for Kenyan and Tanzanian importers already facing high operational expenses. Analysts warn that other shipping lines may follow suit, partly due to congestion at Dar es Salaam port.
