Sifuna Faces New Woes in Bid to Register Linda Mwananchi Party

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna faces a challenge to the proposed renaming of The Equitable Party (TEP) as the Linda Mwananchi Movement. On October 21, Chepalungu parliamentary aspirant Ruto Festus asked the Registrar of Political Parties to verify whether party delegates approved the change, as required by TEP’s constitution. The party’s National Executive Committee began the process on October 8, which also proposes changes to the party’s colours, symbol and constitution. The Registrar has started the statutory gazettement process, while the objection adds to hurdles for Sifuna ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s National Assembly condemned threats by UDPS official Fils Mukoko, who said he would distribute weapons to young people and threatened Westerners and their embassies in Kinshasa. Opening the 21 October plenary session, lower-house president Aimé Boji Sangara called the remarks unprecedentedly violent and contrary to Article 190 of the Constitution, as well as the country’s obligations to protect diplomatic missions. Mukoko was dismissed by the governor of Kinshasa, while the justice minister ordered an investigation and the CSAC imposed an 88-day media embargo. The UDPS distanced itself from his statements and reaffirmed its commitment to non-violence.
