After Mao video controversy, China targets On and its contract with Mbappé

Chinese outlet Guancha criticized Swiss brand On on November 2 for not ending its partnership with Kylian Mbappé after a controversy in China over a video of the player concerning Mao Zedong. Dongpeng and Mengniu had ended their partnerships with Mbappé on October 27, while On has announced no break in its ten-year deal, signed on September 18. On said on October 30 that it welcomed Mbappé’s apology and deeply respected the Chinese people, but did not clarify the future of the collaboration. Guancha said the “Kylian’s Edit” page remains on On’s global website with products for sale, and noted that the first football boot designed with Mbappé is expected in 2027.

The sector generated 87 billion CFA francs in revenue in Togo in 2022, according to the APSAT.
