Small Island States' leaders meet in New York City

The Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) Leaders' Meeting 2026 was held in New York during the 81st UN General Assembly session, bringing together Heads of State and Government to discuss climate change, ocean governance, sustainable development, and international financing. Palau's President Surangel S. Whipps Jr. opened the session, while Seychelles' President Dr Patrick Herminie emphasized the need to turn international commitments into practical actions, highlighting progress on the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index and the BBNJ Agreement. The meeting also focused on preparations for COP31, the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Conference, and the 2027 SDG Summit.
