Somalia: Floods could displace more than 800,000 people

Nearly 874,000 people in Somalia could be forced from their homes over the next three months because of rising rivers and heavy rainfall, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) warned. The Danish Refugee Council and the IOM estimate that floods could cause 92% of population displacement as the rainy season is expected to bring above-normal rainfall amid strengthening El Niño conditions. The IOM is working with Somali authorities to improve early-warning systems and prepare emergency aid, but only 14% of the $16.6 million needed has been raised. Humanitarian organizations are drawing lessons from the 2023 disaster, while scaling back operations because of major funding cuts.
