South Africa: Investigation into the murder of an anti-migrant leader

South African police have opened an investigation, assigned to a special unit, into the murder of Andile Mvuyelwa Somgxada, leader of the anti-migrant movement 'March and March', who was shot outside his home in Johannesburg in early July 2026 and died in hospital. Other anti-migrant leaders have reportedly received death threats. The country is experiencing xenophobic violence targeting African nationals, accused by unofficial groups of stealing jobs and fueling insecurity. The government says it has expelled or repatriated over 50,000 migrants.
