South Africa seeks to block auction of Mandela items again

The South African government filed with the Constitutional Court on September 8 to block the auction of 29 items belonging to Nelson Mandela, scheduled in the United States. The Department of Culture and SAHRA argue that these items are heritage objects and their export without authorization is illegal. This dispute has pitted South African authorities against the auction house Guernsey’s, which is organizing the sale with the agreement of Mandela's daughter, Makaziwe.
