South Africa: The Discreet Return of Leopards on the West Coast

A small population of leopards has returned to the west coast of South Africa after more than 170 years of absence, mainly originating from the Cederberg mountain region. Their disappearance was caused by hunting during European colonization in the 17th century, but their comeback is facilitated by fewer livestock farmers and more protected natural areas. Their return is seen as a major event by conservationists, although some farmers fear their presence.
