South-East has better presidential options than Peter Obi, says Umahi

Nigeria’s Works Minister, David Umahi, said Peter Obi is not the best presidential candidate the South-East can produce. Speaking to Arise News, Umahi faulted the former Anambra governor for not consulting regional governors and other political leaders before launching his 2023 bid. He said several South-East politicians are qualified and that the presidency should not automatically go to Anambra, while defending regional leaders who support Bola Tinubu. Umahi argued that alliances with other parts of Nigeria would improve the region’s prospects of producing a president.

He said Moscow was ready to restart trilateral talks with Kyiv and Washington on the security of both countries after the conflict. Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov had said the previous day that Russia agreed in principle to resume talks after November 10, with a possible meeting in Abu Dhabi in mid-November. Volodymyr Zelensky backed the proposal, while Dmitry Peskov said nothing had yet been finalized.

No electricity, no vote: South Africans threaten to shun ANC

In Katlehong, near Johannesburg, 180 households have relied on illegal electricity connections for more than 20 years because they have not been connected to the grid. Community leader Lesiba Rankapole says residents will shun the November 4 local elections unless the problem is addressed, while others complain about illegal dumping and persistent sewage failures. The ANC, which won 46 percent of the vote in the 2021 local elections and just over 40 percent nationally in 2024, faces declining support and the prospect of councils without outright majorities.
