South Sudan Election: Politicians Challenging Kiir for the presidency - The EastAfrican

At least five South Sudanese politicians have declared or previously expressed interest in contesting the presidency ahead of the general elections scheduled for December 22, 2026. Incumbent President Salva Kiir, 82, has led South Sudan since independence in 2011 and was endorsed by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement as its presidential candidate. He has never faced a direct electoral vote, having held power through appointment and transition until this upcoming ballot.
